AGs Act in Response to Pedophiles Using Image Generators to Create Child Pornography

In a rare bi-partisan effort, all 50 Attorneys General of the U.S. have come together to confront what they call child abuse being enabled by AI. Yes AI. It’s disheartening how this criminal element can take the greatest invention in centuries and misuse it so tragically.

All 50 AGs have signed a letter urging Congress to take action against the proliferation of AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM.)

As first reported by The Associated Press, the bipartisan letter, sent Tuesday to Republican and Democratic legislators in the House and Senate, asks political leaders to “establish an expert commission to study the means and methods of AI that can be used to exploit children specifically” and “propose solutions to deter and address such exploitation in an effort to protect America’s children.”

Lack of Action

We are aware of the tech leaders who have practically begged the U.S. Congress to take action on several issues involving AI. So far about all America has done is put out the Biden Administration’s AI Guidelines. These are clearly not enough. On July 21, 2023, the Biden administration announced that seven companies leading the development of artificial intelligence (AI) — Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI — have made voluntary commitments, which the companies agreed to undertake immediately.

Image Generators

Back in June, The Washington Post reported that the growing prevalence of AI-generated CSAM was making it more difficult to help real child sex abuse victims, with one expert, Rebecca Portnoff, the director of data science at the nonprofit child-safety group Thorn, telling the newspaper that she and her team had seen a month-over-month increase since image generators first started to reach the public sphere last fall.

With that in mind, it’s worth noting that as open-source image generators become increasingly prevalent and easy to access, it’ll likely become much harder to police what they are producing.

From the Letter

The most shocking part of this story from futurism.com is the ease with which these pedophiles have begun using this tech. And it’s likely to get much worse unless we all pitch in to help with this. Should you run across something like this please report it immediately.

From the AG letter:

“We are engaged in a race against time to protect the children of our country from the dangers of AI,” the letter continues. “Indeed, the proverbial walls of the city have already been breached. Now is the time to act.”
