San Francisco Startup Deploys Humanoid Robots for Residential Cleaning

San Francisco startup Tau Robotics is bringing humanoid robots directly into the home, offering an invite-only cleaning service that charges customers $30 an hour. The company’s robots can vacuum floors, wipe kitchen counters, clean spills, pick up loose items and take out the trash, moving humanoid robotics beyond controlled demonstrations and industrial pilots into one of the most familiar environments possible: the household. Tau says the machines are already operating in real San Francisco homes and can adapt to individual spaces and preferences.

Human operators remotely monitor the machines while they work, providing oversight as the robots navigate unpredictable homes filled with furniture, pets, stairs, clutter and other challenges that are considerably less structured than a factory floor. Tau ultimately hopes to make the robots fully autonomous, making the current cleaning service both a commercial product and a real-world testing environment for improving their ability to work independently.

Tau’s ambitions also extend beyond housekeeping. The company eventually wants its humanoids to perform home repairs and assist with elderly care, applications that would require substantially greater dexterity, reliability and trust than basic cleaning tasks. Everything involving the current service is operated locally in San Francisco, and bookings remain invite-only, with prospective customers joining a waitlist for access.

The service arrives as humanoid robotics begins moving from eye-catching demonstrations toward practical deployment. Manufacturers have spent years showing robots walking, running and manipulating objects, but home environments provide a much tougher test of whether physical AI can perform useful work consistently around people. Tau’s $30-an-hour model also introduces a potentially important economic question: rather than asking consumers to purchase an expensive humanoid outright, robotics companies may be able to sell robot labor itself as a service.
