Apple to Ready AR Glasses in 2019 4th Quarter to Appeal to the Masses

“I think it is profound,” Cook said. “I am so excited about it, I just want to yell out and scream.”

Long ago in June of 2017, Bloomberg asked Tim Cook how AR would impact Apple’s future. The highlighted quote above was Cook’s answer. Writer Lisa Eadicico has a piece in businessinsider.com that sheds some light on what Cook was talking about back in 2017. It’s the AR Glasses that Apple expects to go into mass production in the fourth quarter of 2019.

Apple will require the iPhone to be connected to AR glasses for the phone to do most of the heavy lifting, at first anyway. Analyst Ming-Chi-Ko released a report of his predictions about the coming glasses after reviewing the 9to5mac blog.

A patent application published last month suggests that Apple is at least considering how smartphones and headsets can work together to run AR apps because it includes an illustration of a person wearing a headset while manipulating a smartphone. Apple’s patent suggests the phone would simply have to be near the headset to function.

These Apple AR glasses will operate on a completely different level than the Hololens Headset by Microsoft uses VR, not AR.

“AR is going to take a while, because there are some really hard technology challenges there,” Cook said during a talk with former Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch more than two years ago. “But it will happen, it will happen in a big way, and we will wonder when it does, how we ever lived without it. Like we wonder how we lived without our phone today.”
