Demis Hassabis Shifts Focus toward Artificial General Intelligence Research

Google has announced a major leadership restructuring within Google DeepMind aimed at accelerating its artificial intelligence strategy while preparing for what company leaders describe as the next phase of AGI development. CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that Demis Hassabis will transition from overseeing day-to-day operations to become Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, allowing him to focus on long-term AGI strategy, scientific research and advancing AI applications in fields such as healthcare through Isomorphic Labs.

Operational leadership of Google DeepMind will now shift to longtime executive Koray Kavukcuoglu, who becomes Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind while continuing as Chief AI Architect. Kavukcuoglu, as noted in an article at blog.google, will oversee Gemini model development, frontier AI research, the Gemini application, and developer platforms. Google says the leadership changes are intended to maintain rapid product development while allowing Hassabis to concentrate on shaping the broader trajectory of artificial general intelligence and scientific discovery.

The announcement also reflects Google’s growing confidence in its AI momentum. According to company leadership, the Gemini ecosystem now serves more than 950 million monthly users, while Gemini models continue expanding across Search, Cloud, YouTube, enterprise products and developer platforms. Google also highlighted recent advances in robotics, cybersecurity and open models, emphasizing that it remains one of the few companies controlling the complete AI technology stack—from custom infrastructure and cloud computing to frontier models and consumer applications.

Beyond organizational changes, the announcement signals Google’s long-term strategic direction. Rather than treating AGI as a distant research objective, company leadership increasingly describes it as an approaching technological milestone requiring focused scientific leadership, responsible development, and sustained investment. Google’s restructuring suggests that as frontier AI systems become more capable, leadership itself may become increasingly specialized, separating operational execution from long-range scientific stewardship.
