Platform Seeks Balance Between Innovation, Trust and Accountability
YouTube is introducing a new set of transparency measures aimed at helping viewers better understand when content has been created or significantly altered using artificial intelligence. The changes, as noted in an article at blog.youtube, build on the platform’s existing AI disclosure system, which has been in place since 2024, and are designed to make labels more visible while simplifying how creators communicate AI usage to their audiences.
Under the updated policy, labels for photorealistic or meaningfully AI-generated content will be displayed more prominently. For traditional videos, disclosures will appear directly beneath the video player, while Shorts will feature AI labels as an overlay on the content itself. Less significant AI modifications—such as minor edits or clearly animated content—will continue to be disclosed within expanded video descriptions rather than through prominent on-screen labels.
YouTube is also introducing automated AI detection capabilities to supplement creator disclosures. Beginning in May 2026, the platform will use internal detection systems to identify significant AI-generated content. If creators fail to disclose AI usage and YouTube’s systems detect meaningful synthetic media, the platform will automatically apply disclosure labels. In certain situations, such as content generated with YouTube’s own AI tools or media containing C2PA metadata, these disclosures will be permanent and cannot be removed.
The move reflects a broader industry effort to balance transparency, creator flexibility, and viewer trust as generative AI becomes increasingly common. YouTube emphasizes that disclosure labels will not affect recommendations or monetization eligibility, signaling that the company views transparency not as a punishment, but as a foundational requirement for maintaining credibility in an increasingly AI-generated media landscape.
