Olympic Movement Embraces AI to Promote Solidarity and Sustainability

The Olympic AI Agenda is the third strategic document under IOC President Thomas Bach, following Olympic Agenda 2020 and Olympic Agenda 2020+5. It aims to explore the transformative potential of AI in sports. Since the adoption of Olympic Agenda 2020+5 in March 2021, the digital revolution has accelerated, presenting opportunities to reshape various aspects of life, including sports. Despite existing stand-alone AI projects in sports, there has been no comprehensive approach to harness AI’s potential while managing its risks.

The potential deployment of AI in sports offers a groundbreaking opportunity for global accessibility, aligning with the IOC’s mission for solidarity and inclusivity. The Olympic AI Agenda, as reported in olympics.com, outlines a governance and oversight framework to identify and mitigate risks associated with AI. Developed with input from an AI Working Group composed of experts from diverse fields, the agenda aims to leverage their insights to support AI deployment within the Olympic Movement.

The IOC AI Working Group conducted an extensive review of AI applications in sports, identifying high-impact areas where AI can inspire innovation. The agenda emphasizes the need for collaboration across the Olympic Movement, involving athletes, International Federations, National Olympic Committees, Worldwide Olympic Partners, the International Paralympic Committee, and other organizations. This collective effort is essential to harness AI’s full potential while remaining vigilant to associated risks.

By inviting all stakeholders to participate, the IOC aims to promote solidarity, enhance digitalization, improve sustainability and resilience, and reinforce sport’s role in society. The Olympic AI Agenda seeks to build a better world through sport, leveraging AI to achieve these goals while ensuring ethical and responsible use of technology. This collaborative effort will involve developing new AI-driven tools and solutions that enhance athletic performance, improve fan engagement, and streamline event management. The IOC is committed to ongoing dialogue and cooperation with all its partners to address any challenges and capitalize on opportunities presented by AI. Together, they aim to create a more inclusive and innovative sports environment that benefits athletes, fans, and the broader community, ultimately contributing to the IOC’s vision of building a better world through sport.
