Apple Reveals AR Display Projects for Self-Driving Cars
Over the last year a wide range of patents that concern covering autonomous vehicles is making news, especially in Europe. An Apple centric blog called Patently Apple.com does news reports on Apple’s patents and other projects they are focused on. One story details Apples involvement with European Car maker Volkswagen, and building a new autonomous vehicle.
The detailed patent covers a future augmented reality windshield system which also is known as a Heads up Display. Apple describes every aspect of their AR display system in painstaking detail. It even describes occupants of an autonomous vehicle having a FaceTime session between different vehicles. The system will even be able to detect and make adjustments so that a panicky occupant could remain calmer in the autonomous vehicle.
Apple notes that in many situations, a graphical overlay can be provided on an environment that is perceived through a transparent surface, including a window. A graphical overlay can provide information to an observer, including information which is relevant to one or more portions of the perceived environment.
The Heads Up Display can be used to communicate from car to car or to entertain passengers within. Also its thought that the display feature will calm down nervous passengers who might not yet be comfortable with robotic transport.
The article regarding these new patents also includes a wealth of patent drawings that lays out Apple’s Autonomous Vehicle Navigation System as well as some official patent figure images ( see below), explaining some of the AR Apple plans to use in this project.
