After more than 35 years combating malware, renowned cybersecurity expert Mikko Hyppönen is pivoting to a new frontier: defending against drones. Long known as one of the most influential voices in cybersecurity, Hyppönen is now applying his expertise to countering unmanned aerial threats—an area he sees as the next major security challenge.

Hyppönen’s career, as noted in techcrunch.com, spans the evolution of cyber threats, from early floppy disk viruses to modern ransomware and state-sponsored hacking. While cybersecurity has matured into a highly sophisticated, $250 billion industry, he argues that many traditional attack vectors have become harder to exploit, especially for everyday cybercriminals. In contrast, drone warfare and security remain relatively underdeveloped, offering both risks and opportunities.

Motivated in part by geopolitical tensions—particularly Russia’s use of drones in Ukraine—Hyppönen joined Helsinki-based Sensofusion as chief research officer. There, he is working on anti-drone systems capable of detecting, tracking, and even disabling drones by analyzing their radio frequencies and communication protocols. The approach mirrors cybersecurity techniques, such as identifying malware signatures and exploiting system vulnerabilities.

Despite the shift in domain, Hyppönen sees familiar patterns. The ongoing cat-and-mouse dynamic between attackers and defenders persists, as adversaries adapt to new defenses. For him, the mission remains the same—protecting people from evolving threats—only now the battlefield has expanded from code to the physical world of autonomous machines.
