Minimalist AI Wearable Focuses on Memory Instead of Companionship, Distraction

Pebble has introduced Index 01, a compact ring designed to act as “external memory” by letting users quickly capture fleeting thoughts, reminders and notes. The concept is deliberately simple: press and hold a button, speak into the built-in microphone, and the audio is sent to a phone where it becomes a note, reminder, calendar entry, or other saved item. The creator positions the ring as a way to reduce reliance on pulling out a phone—especially when hands are full—while ensuring fast, dependable capture in everyday situations like commuting, chores, and childcare.

The device, according to an article at repebble.com, emphasizes reliability and intentional use over ambient, always-on AI. Index 01 only records while the button is pressed, and processing is designed to happen locally on the user’s phone using open-source speech-to-text and AI models, with an optional higher-quality cloud speech-to-text service. Pebble frames this as “private by design,” arguing that inner-thought capture demands strict control and minimal distraction. The ring also includes on-ring storage for up to five minutes of audio, allowing recordings even when a phone is out of range.

Pebble is also leaning into practicality and longevity. Index 01 is built from stainless steel, is water-resistant to 1 meter, and comes in three finishes with eight U.S. ring sizes. It omits a speaker and vibration motor to stay focused as an input-only device, using an LED sparingly to conserve power. Battery life is pitched as a core differentiator: while total recording time is limited, typical short daily memos are expected to stretch the battery to roughly two years, avoiding the repeated charging cycle common to other smart rings.

Beyond its core “remember this” function, Pebble is positioning Index 01 as a customizable platform for power users. The company describes configurable single/double-click actions, webhooks for routing audio or transcripts, and support for adding new capabilities via MCP-style mini-apps—while still keeping the primary path optimized for fast capture. Index 01 is available for preorder at $75, with the price set to rise to $99 once worldwide shipping begins in March 2026, as Pebble continues development and testing ahead of launch.
