The United Arab Emirates, according to an article in perplexity.ai, has entered the global AI race with unprecedented force, unveiling K2 Think, a 32-billion-parameter reasoning model developed by Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence and G42. Announced on September 9, 2025, the open-source system matches or surpasses the performance of AI giants many times its size. MBZUAI President Eric Xing described K2 Think as “a disruption,” emphasizing its ability to outperform flagship reasoning models 20 times larger. K2 Think’s performance rests on six technical pillars, including long chain-of-thought fine-tuning, reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards, agentic planning for decomposing complex tasks and speculative decoding optimized for Cerebras wafer-scale processors. Running at 2,000 tokens per second, the model leads open-source benchmarks such as AIME ’24/’25 and OMNI-Math-HARD, rivaling systems from OpenAI and DeepSeek that use over 200 billion parameters. By achieving state-of-the-art reasoning with fewer computational resources, K2 Think presents a highly efficient alternative to traditional large-scale AI models.
Unlike competitors that restrict transparency, the UAE has made K2 Think fully open-source, releasing not just model weights but also its training data, deployment code, and test-time optimization algorithms.
