Tech Giant Strengthens AI and Robotics Ambitions with 35% Stake in Rainbow Robotics

Samsung Electronics has significantly expanded its stake in Rainbow Robotics, becoming its largest shareholder to accelerate the development of humanoid and advanced robotics. Initially acquiring a 14.7% stake in 2023 for KRW 86.8 billion, Samsung has exercised its call option to increase ownership to 35%, integrating Rainbow Robotics as a subsidiary in its consolidated financial statements. The partnership aims to leverage Samsung’s AI and software expertise alongside Rainbow Robotics’ technological capabilities to push forward innovations in humanoid robots.

Founded in 2011 by researchers from KAIST’s Humanoid Robot Research Center, Rainbow Robotics is known for developing Korea’s first two-legged walking robot, “Hubo.” Samsung’s collaboration with the company seeks to combine advanced AI, automation, and robotics technologies to create intelligent humanoids. The partnership, as reported in news.samsung.com, will also establish a synergy council to develop new robot technologies, identify market opportunities, and refine business strategies, ensuring both companies strengthen their position in the global robotics industry.

Samsung plans to integrate Rainbow Robotics’ collaborative robots, dual-arm mobile manipulators, and autonomous mobile robots into its manufacturing and logistics operations. These robots will utilize AI algorithms to analyze situational data and environmental factors, optimizing automation tasks in real time. Moreover, Rainbow Robotics will leverage Samsung’s global sales network to expand its reach into international markets, accelerating its global presence and commercialization efforts.

To solidify its long-term vision, Samsung has established a Future Robotics Office reporting directly to the CEO, focusing on next-generation humanoid robots and emerging robotic technologies. Dr. Jun-Ho Oh, a founding member of Rainbow Robotics and an honorary professor at KAIST, will lead the Future Robotics Office as an advisor after retiring from Rainbow Robotics. His extensive experience in robotics research and industry-academic collaboration will play a crucial role in shaping Samsung’s robotics strategy, securing its competitiveness in this rapidly evolving field.
