Artist Creates Arizona Christmas with Neon Flair
When you think of Christmas, Arizona is probably the last place you’d picture for traditional Christmas scenes. Snow, holly and evergreens aren’t what you go to Phoenix to experience, even if parts of Northern Arizona are a Christmas wonderland.
However, in Phoenix at the Desert Botanical Garden, a new exhibit brings Christmas lights into the 21st Century with a bright array of colors and projected 3D effects.
Desert Botanical Garden executive director Ken Schutz said of the new display Electric Desert, “It feels familiar and very different at the same time.” It’s “mesmerizing” and “psychedelic.” Electric Desert, by visual artist Ricardo Rivera, is juicing up garden visitors. “It’s just extraordinary,” Schutz said. “It’s 3-D mapping and it’s sort of Peter Max-ish in terms of its colors and shape and the way it changes.
