OpenAI’s Pulse Marks a Shift From Reactive Chatbot to Intelligent Daily Companion
OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Pulse, a new feature preview available to Pro users on mobile that shifts the chatbot from reactive question-answering to proactive personalized updates. Pulse synthesizes information from chat history, user feedback, and connected apps like Gmail and Google Calendar to deliver daily visual cards with recommendations, reminders and next steps toward goals. By doing research asynchronously, Pulse aims to anticipate user needs rather than wait for prompts.
The tool, as noted at openai.com, integrates feedback loops so users can shape the content of their daily updates. For example, Pulse may suggest family-friendly hotels, unique travel experiences, or professional tennis updates depending on user preferences. Suggestions are ephemeral—available only for the day unless saved—but can evolve over time as Pulse learns from ongoing input. Safety filters are in place to ensure content does not violate OpenAI’s policies.
Beyond scheduling tips and project reminders, Pulse aspires to provide actionable support for daily life and long-term planning. OpenAI envisions it as a foundation for more advanced capabilities: drafting agendas, suggesting timely resources, and preparing insights before meetings. The goal is to save users time while enhancing productivity, blending conversation, memory, and integrations into a proactive assistant.
Currently in preview, Pulse will eventually expand to Plus subscribers and later to all users. OpenAI says it will refine the system based on early adoption before scaling up. The long-term vision is for ChatGPT to evolve from a tool that responds when asked into one that continuously helps people make progress, serving as an intelligent companion that delivers relevant updates exactly when needed.
