The Future of Language Learning Has Arrived—and It Speaks 148 New Tongues
Duolingo has announced the largest content expansion in its history, unveiling 148 new language courses and more than doubling its existing catalog. This historic rollout marks a major milestone for the world’s leading mobile learning platform, allowing Duolingo to offer its seven most popular non-English languages—Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Mandarin—across all 28 supported user interface languages. With this update, Duolingo is opening the door for over a billion global learners to study high-demand languages, especially Asian ones, from their native language interfaces.
The expansion was made possible by Duolingo’s strategic investment in generative AI and automation technologies. Previously, building a single language course required years of manual work from small teams. Now, Duolingo can scale faster and more efficiently using its new “shared content” system, which creates a high-quality core course that can be rapidly localized for dozens of different native languages. According to investors.duolingo.com, CEO Luis von Ahn credited this technological leap as a demonstration of how AI can directly accelerate educational access and quality at scale.
The new language courses primarily serve beginner learners and meet CEFR A1–A2 proficiency standards. They include Duolingo’s signature immersive features such as Stories for reading and DuoRadio for listening comprehension. According to Jessie Becker, Senior Director of Learning Design, Duolingo’s internal tools and AI-driven content generation allow its educators to focus on refining and validating the material to maintain the platform’s rigorous standards, while ensuring faster rollout of high-quality lessons.
This initiative also significantly enhances language accessibility in underserved regions. For instance, Latin American users who speak Spanish or Portuguese can now study Japanese, Korean, and Mandarin. Across Europe, speakers of 15 languages—including French, German, and Italian—can access these top Asian languages for the first time. In Asia, native speakers of 12 languages like Vietnamese, Tagalog, and Tamil can now learn all seven top languages, not just English. This landmark expansion reaffirms Duolingo’s mission to make high-quality language education globally accessible.
