Orion Project Proves Augmented Reality Is (Finally) Ready for Real-World Use

Meta executives Alex Himel and Mark Rabkin have outlined their vision for the future of computing, stating that augmented reality (AR) smart glasses will eventually replace traditional mobile devices. Building on the company’s existing hardware like the Quest VR headsets and Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses, Meta’s long-term goal is to converge these technologies into a sleek, wearable AR device. The company’s Orion project, in development for over a decade, has proven that advanced AR capabilities—once confined to bulky headsets—can now fit into regular eyeglasses.

A key advancement driving this shift is artificial intelligence. Himel emphasized how AI will power future glasses, enabling features like identifying objects users are looking at and taking immediate action, such as calling a number just by glancing at it. He described a future where AI and AR combine to offer context-aware digital assistants, turning everyday activities into seamless, voice- and vision-driven interactions. Meta hopes to make AI feel intuitive and ever-present in daily life through these glasses.

Orion also demonstrated that AR glasses could provide a wide field of view—over 70 degrees—making it possible to display virtual items, like TVs or photo frames, directly within the user’s real-world environment. Himel believes this could eventually eliminate the need for certain physical devices altogether. Meta views this as a major milestone toward creating immersive, practical AR experiences that can change how we interact with our surroundings.

Despite increased competition from Apple, Google, and Samsung, Meta welcomes other players in the AR and wearable tech space. Himel noted that more entrants will increase consumer options, reduce costs, and improve accessibility. Ultimately, Meta’s goal remains to connect people in meaningful ways, ensuring its wearables are comfortable, stylish, and able to support deep personal connections across its platforms.
