Siri Just Got Smarter: ChatGPT Now Powers Complex Requests on Apple Devices

Apple has integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its operating systems, enhancing its Apple Intelligence suite with more advanced AI capabilities alongside Siri. Initially announced at WWDC, this integration is available in iOS 18.2 for iPhones and iPads, as well as macOS Sequoia for Macs, enabling ChatGPT to handle complex requests when Siri determines it is better suited for the task. Users can enable the feature without requiring an OpenAI account, ensuring privacy by avoiding data storage and hiding IP addresses, or opt-in for an OpenAI account to access additional functionalities.

This collaboration, as reported in the-decoder.com, was part of OpenAI’s “12 Days of OpenAI” product launches, showcased through demos highlighting features such as playlist creation and PDF integration. While these demonstrations revealed practical applications, they left room for improvement in functionality, such as seamless playlist playback. The integration faced delays, initially slated for last fall, and is part of Apple Intelligence’s ongoing development with many features anticipated in future updates.

The iOS 18.2 update also introduces other AI tools like Image Playground for creative photo editing, Genmoji for personalized emojis, and Writing Tools for enhancing texts. These features are accessible through the Camera Control button and integrate with technologies like Google Lens and GPT-4 for advanced object identification and diagram explanations. However, due to EU regulations, some features like Image Playground and OpenAI’s Sora model are delayed in European markets until at least April 2025.

Looking ahead, Apple plans to expand Siri’s capabilities, incorporating deeper contextual understanding and new commands for both Apple and third-party applications. Meanwhile, OpenAI continues to develop its offerings, including updates to Canvas and new fine-tuning methods, aiming to complement Apple’s AI advancements in delivering innovative user experiences.
